This is a Victorian silver-plated oil lamp or table lighter, made by the Derby Silver Company, as indicated by the hallmark on the underside. The piece likely dates from the late 19th to early 20th century (circa 1880–1900), during the height of the American silverplate manufacturing boom. The lamp is designed in the form of a tankard, featuring a single handle and topped with a threaded lid holding a wick. It is ornately decorated in high relief with Rococo-style repoussé scrollwork and foliate motifs, typical of Derby’s elaborate and elegant designs. The form, paired with the intricate detailing, speaks to the decorative tastes of the Victorian era, when such utilitarian items were crafted to also serve as ornamental accents. Derby Silver Company was founded in 1872 in Derby, Connecticut, and became known for producing high-quality silverplate hollowware.
