Late 19th Century Black Forest Carved Oak Tobacco Cabinet
A highly charming and rare Late 19th Century Black Forest carved oak tobacco cabinet / small liqueur cabinet, likely German / Swiss or Tyrolean folk art, circa 1880-1900.
The cabinet is entirely hand-carved in deep relief:
• Top compartment: A humorous pastoral scene of three farmers milking / holding a stubborn bull, with keyhole escutcheon disguised as a shell.
• Front doors: One with a monkey smoking a pipe among tobacco leaves, the other with tobacco leaves and implements.
• Sides: Beautiful oak leaves with acorns and songbirds.
The cabinet opens to reveal a hinged top lid and two lower doors enclosing two original carved tobacco jars with sunburst detail. Raised on four carved paw feet. In rich, dark stained oak with wonderful patina and age-appropriate wear.
