A magnificent and highly sculptural pair of Italian Venetian Baroque curule benches, embodying the drama and opulence of a Venetian Palazzo.
Crafted in the iconic Roman curule form, each bench features an extraordinary X-frame base that is entirely hand-carved. The design showcases mythical dolphins with intricately carved scale motifs, terminating in bold acanthus scrolls and regal lion paw feet - a symbol of power and grandeur. The central cartouche is adorned with a large, fanned scallop shell and sweeping foliate carvings, finished in a layered, antique silvered-gilt over an ivory distressed ground.
This lavish silver leaf finish is artfully antiqued to reveal the warm cream undertones, creating a time-worn, old-world patina that highlights every detail of the carving - from the feathers to the dolphin scales, as seen in the close-up photos.
The seats are generously padded and upholstered in a luxurious high-relief cut velvet damask in an ivory and champagne damask pattern, depicting classic acanthus and pomegranate motifs. The upholstery is finished with a braided gimp and a row of oversized, hand-hammered pewter nailheads, adding a bespoke, jewelry-like detail.
