Mediterranean barreal Jars - Verdigris Patinated Terracotta Olive Vassels

A magnificent pair of colossal Mediterranean-style barrel-form olive jars, offering monumental scale and an extraordinary patina.

This matched pair represents the most coveted form of the traditional Biot jar / Tinaja — the broad-shouldered, banded barrel silhouette. Originally crafted in Southern France and the Mediterranean to store oil, olives, and grain for farm estates, these vessels have transcended their utilitarian purpose to become powerful sculptural artifacts.

The pair is finished in a breathtaking, heavily encrusted verdigris patina. The terracotta body is enveloped in layers of weathered moss green, oxidized teal, chalky limestone, ochre, and raw earth — a dry, mineralized crust that has crackled, peeled, and bloomed over a century. No two views are alike; the surface is abstract, painterly, and alive with texture. The horizontal raised bands articulate the form and catch the light, creating dramatic shadow and depth.

With their generous and powerfully rounded forms, they command any space. Perfect as palatial entry flanking urns, terrace planters for mature olive trees, or as standalone sculptural statements in a Belgian, Wabi-Sabi, Mediterranean, Tuscan, or Organic Modern estate.

A true statement pair — increasingly difficult to find in a well-matched set at this scale and with such authentic verdigris character.

The interior opening measures an impressive 22.5 inches in diameter, allowing for dramatic planting or styling with large-scale branches.
