Antique Mediterranean Olive Jar, Terracotta, Rustic
An evocative and highly atmospheric Mediterranean style olive jar, celebrated for its profound, worn character and painterly surface.
This monumental ovoid vessel, traditionally known as a Biot jar or Spanish Tinaja, was originally crafted for the storage of oil, olives, and grain. Its terracotta body bears a spectacular tapestry of - layers of weathered moss, lichen green, chalky white, and raw earth, with a dry, mineral crust that has developed. The surface is richly distressed, brushed, and mottled, creating an abstract, almost fresco-like patina that is difficult to replicate.
The form is beautifully simple and archetypal - a generous rounded belly tapering to a thick, hand-thrown rolled rim, with the warm, raw terracotta revealed at the lip and interior. It is both primitive and sophisticated, a true piece of functional sculpture.
Perfect as a standalone sculptural statement in an entry, beside a fireplace, or as a dramatic garden urn in a Wabi-Sabi, Belgian, Mediterranean, Tuscan, or Organic Modern interior.
The interior opening is an impressive 11 inches in diameter.
