A truly exquisite and highly sculptural pair of French Louis XV-style side tables, circa early to mid-20th century, embodying pure Rococo drama and French craftsmanship at its finest.

The form is pure theatre,  a serpentine square top with molded edge over a voluptuous, shaped apron, raised on four elegant, elongated cabriole legs terminating in scroll feet with original levelers. The tables are designed to be viewed from all sides, with carving wrapping continuously.

What makes this pair exceptional is the depth and quality of the hand-carving.

 •  Central Rocaille Cartouche: The front is dominated by a large, deeply carved, pierced Rocaille cartouche with a central open void, flanked by lush scrolling acanthus, shells, and foliate C-scrolls. The carving is in high relief with dark wax in the recesses to highlight every detail.
 •  Serpentine Carved Aprons: The side and rear aprons are equally carved with shell motifs and scrolled foliage, showing no shortcuts.
 •  Burl Walnut Finish: The wood is a warm, honeyed burl walnut with a rich, distressed, antiqued patina that accentuates the grain and carving -  the beautiful worm-holed, timeworn texture that collectors love.

Perfect as a pair of luxury end tables, nightstands for a high-ceiling primary bedroom, or flanking a Louis XV settee. A rare true matched pair in this heavily carved scale - increasingly difficult to find.
