A highly decorative pair of mid-19th century Italian giltwood mirrors, richly carved in the Rococo Revival manner with exuberant scrolling acanthus, shell motifs, and deeply contoured asymmetrical cartouches.

Each mirror features an elaborate pierced crest and apron with pronounced C-scrolls and foliate detailing, surrounding the original mercury glass plates, now beautifully foxed and softly mottled with age, creating an atmospheric patina prized by designers and collectors alike.

The frames retain their original gesso and water-gilt surfaces, exhibiting warm burnished gold tones with areas of age-appropriate wear, craquelure, and exposed bole — all consistent with authentic 19th century Italian craftsmanship. The hand-carved wood shows strong depth and sculptural modeling, far superior to later composite or molded examples.

The reverse construction, hand-cut mirror plates, and traditional wooden backing further support a circa 1860 dating.

These mirrors were almost certainly produced in Northern Italy during the Rococo Revival period, when Venetian and Lombard workshops reinterpreted 18th century French forms with slightly heavier carving and more dramatic profiles — a look that translates beautifully into today’s interiors.

Perfect installed as a symmetrical pair over commodes or consoles, flanking a doorway, or anchoring an entry or powder room with old-world glamour.
