A rare and monumental pair of Italian Baroque pier mirrors, hand-carved in solid wood and retaining their original mirror plates and historic gilt surface. Architectural in scale and conception, these mirrors were designed to flank a doorway or pier and present as a true, matched pair.

Each mirror features a tall rectangular frame surmounted by an elaborately pierced crest centered with a winged cherub mask within a carved cartouche, flanked by deeply undercut scrolling acanthus and foliate ornament. The lower corners terminate in bold sculptural scroll feet, giving the mirrors a strong vertical presence and classical balance.

The frames retain their original gesso and parcel-gilt finish, now beautifully time-softened. Remnants of water gilding, exposed bole, and subtle polychrome undertones are visible throughout, creating a nuanced silvery-gold surface with exceptional depth and patina.

The original mirror plates show appropriate foxing and silver loss consistent with age. The backs reveal early hand-planed board construction with later sympathetic reinforcement for stability and secure mounting.

Exceptional for their scale, originality, and sculptural carving, this pair brings immediate gravitas and quiet drama to any interior.
