Exceptional late 19th-century American Folk Art copper whale weathervane, mounted on modern iron display base. This is a great example of maritime Americana, shaped in the form of a sperm whale in profile with elegantly curved tail flukes.

Hand-hammered and seamed from sheet copper, showing classic construction techniques of New England weathervane makers. The copper has developed a spectacular natural patina over 100+ years: deep chocolate brown base with patches of bright verdigris and aqua-blue oxidation across the body. The close-up shows the pitted surface, tiny holes, and mineral deposits that only come with genuine age and coastal exposure. This is exactly the "Nantucket whaler" look collectors pay premiums for.

The whale sits on 2 iron support rods with black rectangular base - base is later addition for display, the copper whale itself is original. Despite the pitting and small perforations visible in detail photo, structure remains solid and stable. The tail has perfect dynamic curve, capturing movement as if swimming.

These whaling-era weathervanes came off boathouses, maritime buildings, and coastal homes in Massachusetts, Maine, and Connecticut. Today they’re centerpiece pieces for coastal, nautical, or lodge interiors. Works stunning over fireplace, on library shelf, or as focal point in entry.
