Set of 10 French Provincial dining chairs, circa 1870-1890, from Provence. Includes 2 armchairs with scrolled arms and 8 matching side chairs. Carved from solid oak in the classic ladderback "chaise Provençale" form with 3 shaped horizontal splats.

The top crest rail features hand-carved shell and foliate scrollwork as seen in your detail photo - the shell motif is a signature of Provençal furniture, symbolizing pilgrimage and good fortune. The apron and front stretcher also have delicate floral carving that shows through the limed finish. The cabriole legs have carved acanthus at the knees, ending in scroll feet.

Finished in a beautiful cerused/bleached oak that lets the grain show through while giving that light, airy French farmhouse look. The finish has soft wear and patina consistent with 140+ years. Upholstered in natural linen with drop-in seats - recent work and ready for daily use. The 2 armchairs anchor the ends of a dining table beautifully.

This is rustic French country at its best: more character than modern reproductions, but lighter and more livable than dark Louis XV chairs. Perfect for designers mixing antique + modern.
